Allen Rites To Be Held Monday

Funeral services for Charles E. Allen, 81, of 2014 Chamberlain Ave., emeritus professor of botany at the University of Wisconsin, will be held Monday at 10:30 in the Fitch-Lawrence Funeral Home. The Rev. R. L. Snider, minister of education of the Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Horicon.

Mr. Allen, who was a botany professor at the university for 34 years until his retirement in 1934, died Friday at a Madison hospital after a long illness. He was for some years chairman of the department.

A native of Horicon Mr. Allen was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Allen. He was graduated from Horicon High School at the age of 14 then taught in a country school for a year after taking a year of graduate work.

He began his university education in 1889 but it was interrupted by his father's death. For the next six years he was a court reporter. He was graduated in 1899.

Prof. Allen married Genevieve Sylvester of Milwaukee, in 1902.

In 1904 he received a Carnegie grant to study at the University of Bonn, Germany, and his work on sex chromosomes in plants was published after his year at Bonn.

In 1923-24 Prof. Allen was a visiting professor of botany at Columbia University. In 1941 the University of Chicago honored him with a doctor of science degree.

Surviving are his wife; a sister, Florence, 219 Lathrop St., emeritus assistant professor of mathematics at the university; a daughter, Mrs. C. R. Slater, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two sons, Harold, Baraboo, and Charles, Springfield, Mo.

Charles E. Allen, Longtime U.W. Botany Professor, Dies

Charles Elmer Allen, 81, of 2014 Chamberlain ave., emeritus professor of botany at the University of Wisconsin, died Friday at a Madison hospital after a long illness.

Born in Horicon, Mr. Allen was the son of the late Atty. and Mrs. Charles Allen.

He graduated from Horicon high school at the age of 14, then taught a country school for a year after taking a year of graduate work.

In 1889, he entered the university, but his college training was interrupted by his father's death. For the next six years he was a court reporter.

He returned to the university then and graduated with the class of 1899. He worked his way through college working part time as a court reporter.

As an undergraduate, Prof. Allen was a member of the Hesperia debating society and was an intercollegiate debater.

He was co-founder and first editor of the Sphinx, first university humor magazine. He also was chairman of th 1899 Badger board, and was editor-in-chief of the Daily Cardinal.

In 1909, Prof. Allen received his Ph. D. degree. He had been an instructor in botany since 1901.

He was married to Genevieve Sylvester, of Milwaukee, a classmate, in 1902. In 1904, he received a Carnegie grant to study at the University of Bonn, Germany.

The University of Chicago honored him with a doctor of science degree during its 50th anniversary in 1941.

Prof. Allen's membership's included Delta Upsilon fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Phi Sigma, American Society of Naturalists, Genetic Society of America, American Genetic Association, American Microscopic Society, Botanical Society of America, of which he was president in 1921, Wisconsin Academy of Arts and Sciences, of which he was president from 1930 to 1933, American Association of University Professors, American Philosophical Society, and the National Academy of Sciences.

He was editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Botany during 1918-1926, member of the National Research Council during 1925-31 and was chairman of its biology and agriculture division during 1929-1930.

He was co-author of several botany textbooks and published various articles in scientific journals.

Surviving are his wife; a sister, Florence E. Allen, 219 Lathrop st., emeritus assistant professor of mathematics at the university; a daughter, Mrs. C. R. Slater, Oak Ridge, Tenn.; two sons, Harold S., Baraboo, and Charles R., Springfield, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.

The body is at the Fitch-Lawrence funeral home. Funeral services tentatively are set for Monday. The family requested that flowers be omitted.

Funeral Is To Be Saturday For Mrs. Charles E. Allen

Funeral services for Mrs. Genevieve S. Allen, 91, of 2014 Chamberlain Ave., who died Thursday in a hospital, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Fitch-Lawrence Funeral Home, 626 University Ave. here.

The Rev. Lawrence Gruman of the First Congregational Church will officiate, and burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Horicon.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday morning until time of service.

She was a member of First Congregational Church here, the John Bell Chapter of the DAR, the University League and the AAUW. Her husband, Charles E. a botany professor at the University of Wisconsin, died in 1954.

Mrs. Allen Attended Rockford College, and was an 1899 graduate of the University of Wisconsin.

Survivors include two sons, Harold S., Baraboo, husband of the correspondent there for The Capital Times, and Charles R., Springfield, Mo.; a daughter, Mrs. Clarence R. Slater, Miami, Fla.; a half-brother, Edwin Sylvester, Ridgewood, N. J.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
