WESTFIELD—W. Grant Batson, 58, of Sherman Road, died at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 27, 1962). Authorities said he was stricken while chopping wood in the basement of his home. The Westfield emergency unit was called and administered oxygen. He was pronounced dead by Dr. Van Laughlin.
He was born Aug. 12, 1904, in Clear Lake, Wisc., the son of Willis N. and Lillian Mills Batson. He moved to Sherman in October 1919 and graduated from Chautauqua High School in 1923. He had lived on the Sherman Road for 19 years and had been employed at the Welch Grape Juice Factory for more than 30 years. In addition he operated a small farm.
He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church, and was married June 29, 1930 to the former Mary Samec who survives. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Maurice Horton and Mrs. Ernest Mason, Westfield; three sons, Emil J. Batson, serving with the U.S. Army in Germany, Stephen Batson and William Batson, Westfield. 14 grandchildren; one brother, Clifford Batson, Sherman; two sisters, Mrs. Amy Shroeder, Erie, Pa., and Mrs. Verne Jenkins, Oil City, Pa. He was preceded in death by tow children, Mrs. Theresa Batson Ward, who died in 1960; and Charles G. Batson, who died in 1949.
Funeral arrangements are in charge of the Barber Funeral Home, Westfield.

WESTFIELD—A Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. today in Barber Funeral Home for W. Grant Baston, 58, of the Sherman Road who died Monday (Aug. 27, 1962) in his home. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9 a.m., Friday in St.James Catholic Church. Burial will be in New St. James Cemetery.
