DEATH OF TILGHMAN FISH.

One of Knightstown's Best Citizens Suddenly Called.

About midnight of last Thursday, Nov. 22, Tilghman Fish of Knightstown passed away very suddenly, aged 77 years.

Mr. Fish had been afflicted for some time with heart trouble and neuralgia of the stomach, occasionally having severe attacks. He had remarked to his wife that he would pass away some day in one of these, and his prediction came true.

On the night named he awoke suffering severe pain, and arose, going to the sitting room. He took a large comfort, wrapped it about him and sat down in an easy chair. Mrs. Fish got up and followed him to the sitting room immediately, only to witness her husband slip forward in the chair and die before a physician or neighbor could be called.

Tilghman Fish was born near Baltimore, Md., November 28, 1929, and come with his parents to Richmond, Indiana, in 1836, whence, after three years, the family removed to Washington (now Greensfork), in Wayne county, where they lived for seven years, removing thence to Raysville, where the father built and operated a woolen mill until 1852.

In 1856 the family, except Tilghman, removed to Iowa, where the parents finally died. He took up his residence in Knightstown, where he engaged for nine years in the grocery business and then for twenty-eight years in the hardware business, when he retired from the mercantile business and gave his time principally to his duties as vice-president of the Citizens State Bank of Knightstown.

Mr. Fish was a soldier of the Civil War, serving as 1st lieutenant of Co. I., Third Ind. cavalry from the date of its organization until compelled by ill health to resign in 1862. After his return and throughout the war he gave further proof of his patriotism and loyalty by encouraging enlistments, forwarding supplies to the front and caring for the families of absent soldiers. He died a beloved member of Jerry B. Mason Post, No. 186, G. A. R.

Mr. Fish was also a member of all the local branches of Masonry, from the Commandery down to the Blue Lodge, in all of which he was faithful in attendance and active in promoting the interest of the order.

The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was very largely attended, Mr. Fish being one of the most popular men in Knightstown.
