Mary A. (Zinn) Freed, 89, died at 8:35 p.m. Tuesday March 9, 2010, at The Brethren Home Community in New Oxford surrounded by her family. She was the beloved wife of Luther A. Freed. Together they celebrated over 63 years of marriage.
A funeral service in celebration and thanksgiving for her life will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Roth United Church of Christ with her pastor, the Rev. Gene Edwards, officiating. A viewing will be held on Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. in the church. She will be laid to rest in the church cemetery. Family services were entrusted to Irwin-Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, PC of Spring Grove.
Mary was born on September 24, 1920, in Jackson Township, and was the daughter of the late Samuel F. Zinn and Minerva K. (Myers) Zinn.
She worked as a sales clerk for Sears in Hanover and retired in 1983.
Mary was a longtime member of Trinity Roth United Church of Christ in Spring Grove. She was also a member of Order of the Eastern Star in Hanover, Bethel Commandry Auxiliary, and the AARP Jefferson Chapter #3699.
In addition to her husband, Luther, she is survived by her five sons, Robert S. Freed and his wife, Charlene of York, James A. Freed and his wife, Linda of Menges Mills, Dale E. Freed and his wife, Patricia of Hanover, Donald M. Freed and his wife, Peggy of Spring grove, and John A. Freed and his wife, Deborah Spring Grove; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters, Pauline Sauter, Dolores Witman and Eva Ort; and her brothers, John Zinn, Earl Zinn, Sterling Zinn and Charles Zinn. Mary was predeceased by her daughter, Fern Freed; her daughter-in-law, Lydia Freed; her great-grandson, Cayden Kalentji; and her sister, Ethel Hoover.

A funeral service in celebration and thanksgiving for his life will he held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Roth's United Church of Christ, with pastor, the Rev. Gene Edwards, officiating. Following the service he will be laid to rest next to his wife in the church cemetery with a flag folding ceremony by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. Luther was born in Hanover, on December 18, 1919, and was the son of the late Estella I. (Kemper) and George A. Freed.
He proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team participating in some of the fiercest fighting in the Pacific Theater of operations. The 503rd seized the enemy-held island fortress of Corregidor, one of the most difficult missions of the Pacific War, for which the Regiment received the Presidential Unit Citation Award for extraordinary heroism. Luther also received the Bronze Star for valor in the New Guinea Campaign. He earned, but declined, the Purple Heart because he felt his injury was not severe enough to deserve the medal.
Luther worked for Precision Components in York for over 30 years and retired in 1982.
He was a longtime member of Trinity Roth's U.C.C. in Spring Grove, where he was superintendent of Sunday school for many years. He was a past master of Patmos Lodge #348 F&AM in Hanover, Bethel Commandry #98 in Hanover, Harrisburg Consistory (Scottish Rite), BPO Elks Lodge #763, Viking Athletic Club, and Past President of Jefferson Chapter #3699 AARP.
Luther is suvived by his five sons, Robert S. Freed and his wife, Charlene of York, James A. Freed and his wife, Linda of Menges Mills, Dale E. Freed and his wife, Patricia of Hanover, Donald M. Freed and his wife, Peggy of Spring Grove, and John A. Freed and his wife, Deborah of Spring Grove; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Fern Freed; his daughter-in-law, Lydia Freed; his great-grandson, Cayden Kalentji; his sister, Nadine Geiman; and his brothers, Burnell Freed, Alvin G. Freed, and Raymond J. Freed.
